The local inhabitants call the town Puerto Viejo. This should not be mistaken for Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui located in Heredia. Talmanca lies 34 miles southeast of Puerto Limon and nearly 10 miles to the south of Cahuita. Prior to a bustling town, Talamanca was a small fishing village. The charm of the town is unparalleled.

The town is popular especially among the younger generation of tourists. The beaches of Talamanca are ideal for surfing. Talamanca is a melting pot of cultures with a unique blend of Latin American, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri cultures.
Bars, clubs, and restaurants abound in number. Hotels offering cheap accommodations are plenty. The town is a good bet for shopping. The gold sand beaches blend well with the tropical forests of the area. Some of the favorite destinations include Cahuita National Park, Talamanca Indian Reserve, and Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. The town serves a microcosm for the whole of Costa Rica.

The roads lie in a dilapidated condition. The highway from Limon to Manzanillo is the only paved road of the city. The roads give the town a rustic feel, which sets it apart from other cities. The local inhabitants are known for their hospitality.
Of all the beaches, Salsa Brave is most famous, especially for surfing. The powerful rip current of the water makes it unfavorable for swimming. Only surfers, who are experts, should give surfing a shot. Other activities include horse riding, snorkeling, diving, biking, kayaking, and boogie boarding. Whether it is relaxation or sport, Talamanca will not leave you disappointed.

The town of Talamanca comprises 3% of the total biodiversity in the world. The population has a fair share of Spanish-speaking farmers or campesinos. The beaches of Cahuita and Pta Uva are equally famous. The Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge offers excellent opportunities for hiking. The Cahuita National Park is home to the nesting of turtles and migration of raptors. The town of Pto is known for its nightlife.
There are several development projects underway. In addition, there is a growing emphasis on conservation programs. Some of the rare species of animals include manatees, jaguars, raptors, and turtles.
