Slide down the youngest volcano in Nicaragua
Nicaragua | admin | September 8, 2010There is a sudden silence that you experience just midway, while you descend down a sixteen hundred foot volcanic slope.
It would be good to wear goggles while you plan to shimmie over your board while you slip downhill. Most people get back to their position and back on board, and almost immediately submit to gravity again. Here you go zooming down until the slop becomes gentler and you eventually stop while a gentle audience applauds you.
This could very well be your introduction to volcanic boarding. This awesome sport started mostly around the Cerro Negro area. This is an Ominous charcoal black volcanic region which is located in the western region of Nicaragua. The volcanic boarders speed down the bald side of the active volcano and speeds of about fifty miles per hours. This place is quite humid, dusty, hot and of course quite scary. Although this place seems like it is most fun.
Cerro Negro is most easily reached from Leon. This is an essentially a colonial city what was known to be a center of left wing intellectualism. This is about fifteen miles to the southwest of the twenty four hundred foot mountain. Due to the different amounts of eruptions, the heights could be different. This city used to earlier be and Sandinista influenced place which was occupied mainly by peoys, revolutionaries and university students. The churches are all brightly colored colonial architecture which has very strong morals against corruption. This place is becoming quite famous, getting occupied with people who like to back pack and be adventurous.
A famous institution here called the Bigfoot hostel offers many tours which was an idea that started with Darryn Webb who was a tour guide in Australia. He had a wild childhood and grew up sand boarding in Queensland. And after he visited the volcano he realized how much boarding potential it had!

This slope was more like a dune, although it was much bigger and black. Although if you were a little more thrill and adventure inclined, then it might also tickle your fancy to know that the volcano has a potential for eruption.
He started checking out which could be used as the best board to slide down. So he started off with boogie boards, mattresses and even the minibar fridge. Although he later settled for plywood which is reinforced by metal and then further augmented with Formica right under the seat. People actually really started enjoying it when Darryn figured out the sitting down boards.
The tours here are run by the manager of Bigfoot, Gemma Cope. There are pick up trucks that are a forty minute drive to the Cerro Negro National park. The rural roads here are quite dusty and are usually always blanketed with dark ash which has been here from the year nineteen hundred and ninety nine.
The Negro is in fact he youngest of all volcanoes in the whole of Central America. this volcano started in the year eighteen hundred and fifty and since then it has erupted about twenty times.
