Santa Ana Volcano: A crater of excitement

It’s weird to digest that a volcanic area can be a tourist hotspot. Isn’t it? But is true. The Santa Ana Volcano is actually a tourist destination that draws most of the attentions of visitors in the country. The Santa Ana Volcano is also called as Ilamatepec and is a large stratovolcano that lies in the Santa Ana department of El Salvador. This volcano has a height of 2,381 metres above the sea level and is the highest volcano in the country. El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America.

El Salvador has a magnificent attraction, which is Santa Ana Volcano and lies just west of the Coatepeque Caldera. The Santa Ana summit features four nested calderas and volcanic craters. Along with this, the innermost area includes a small crater lake as well, which is very fascinating. The volcanic front is separated into eight segments that are divided by zones of transverse faulting and offsets. The active volcanoes, out of which many are younger that 100 ka, were headed by a previous Quaternary volcanic front.

To reach at this attraction, you need to take the Pan American highway to Santa Ana, take a turn at the lake Coatepeque exit and simply follow the signs to Cerro Verde. Further you need to drive ahead and for that it is better if you carry a map to this site or get the Santa Ana Volcano information from any center. The recent volcano that was erupted on October 2005 has killed at least two people and injured seven, forcing many people to rush to their village.
