Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is located in the Limon province of Costa Rica. Puerto Viejo is a paradise for beach lovers. The beaches make surfing a favorite activity. Besides the clear, blue waters of the sea, the flora and fauna of the region are a sight to behold.

The town should not be confused with Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui which lies in Heredia. The locals call the town Puerto Viejo. The town lies nearly 34 miles to the south east of Puerto Limon. It is separated from Cahuita by approximately 10 miles. The town was initially a fishing village, and has a charm and beauty of its own. It is more popular with the younger generation of tourists. The culture is a blend of Latino, Bribri, Afro, and Caribbean. Your vacation is sure to be fun-filled and relaxing.

The roads of Puerto Viejo town lie in a dilapidated condition. The highway that connects Limon to Manzanillo is the only paved road of the city. It is common to see the streets littered with dirt. This gives Puerto Viejo a rustic feel. The hospitality of the local inhabitants adds to the beauty of the place.

The waters of the sea have a strong rip current. Therefore, swimming should be avoided. The waves should be restricted only to professional surfers. Other activities include snorkeling, diving, mountain biking, kayaking, and boogie boarding. If you wish to relax or participate in an activity, Puerto Viejo is the place to be.

GandocaSalsa Brava beach is the most famous beach of the region. Manzanillo and Cahuita provide hiking opportunities. The town is also home to the migration of raptors from Kekoldi. Playa Negra or Gandoca is home to marine turtles.

Spanish is the primary language of the inhabitants. However, English comes a close second. The upscale restaurants are the best bet for tourists as the cheaper ones are found lacking in quality. There is also a large shopping mall in the city. Upcoming plans include creation of a port.
