Oaxaca’s Saturday market and Camino real

The state of Oaxaca is free and sovereign. It is one of the thirty one states in Mexico. This state lies to the east of isthmus and tehuantepec. Guerrero lies to the west, Puebla likes to the north and finally the Pacific Ocean to the south.

Originally this state is home to two natives, namely the Zapotec and the Mixtec people. The language spoken amongst these people are most indigenous compared to the rest of the states in Mexico. This state is known to have the largest city which is almost ninety-five thousand five hundred square kilometers.

There are many roads and highways that are spread out through the place so transportation shouldn’t be that much of a problem even if you are just visiting.

The festivals celebrated here are quite prominent with the natives and it would be quite fun for you to go be a part of it. The dia de los muertos is the day of the dead. And noche de los rabanos is the night of the radishes.

Zapotec families have traditionally organized danced and feasts on the birthdays of their patron saints.

The state is also known for its production of native crafts. These crafts include alebrijes, weaving and black clay objects. These objects are usually popular figures of mythical beings. Sometimes it is also a combination of mythical beings along with animals; these figures are painted in vibrant colors and decorated simply but meticulously.

And a lot of the local industries consist of many local families who have just entered the market with their products just so that they could enter the tourism market.

Since the industry is primarily setup up now for the tourists, the produce is modified to suit the needs and likes of the tourists buying it.

This place is abundant in fruits and vegetables. The produce is grown in the valleys in the region. Tropical fruits are usually best found in the north. Shellfish is what most people in the south are very fond of.

Oaxaca is known as the most Mexican city in the whole country. There are plenty of attractive craft shops and galleries within the city. On Saturdays though, there are hundred of Indian merchants who come in here from the surrounding villages even dressed up in their own traditional clothes. These Indian merchants sell everything from hawked food to paintings and handicrafts. . This is the largest and most interesting; Indian experience you could have in Mexico. This place has the largest Indian population in the country. In fact two out of three citizens here are Indians. These have about six sub groups who speak about nine different languages and fifty two dialects. The central abastos or supply center is the main market to sell and display handicrafts. You will find many varieties of hand painted pottery and wooden cats. Also, you will get lots of comic animal characters.

Get some huipile or blouses and rebozos or shawls form the stores here. There are numerous designs to choose from depending on which village they came from and which style was used. The city of Oaxaca has a very boastful Spanish affluence that’s shows by the superb baroque church located in Santo Domingo. The Spanish Rosario chapel is also gold ornamented and highly stylized.  At the convent of Santa catarina de sienna, which is form the sixteenth century, you will find deep rooted Spanish tradition.

Camino real used to be the mayors office and a city jail during the colonial times. Now it has been converted into the Camino real. This is now one of medicos most well known and most attractive hotels.  The hotel lies in an official area, namely the district of national monuments. This compromises of twenty six colonial era churches.  Ancient frescos, hushed flagstone loggias, jasmine scented patios and a cupola covered water fountain, which happens to be surrounded by twelve stone basins is the los lavaderos.
