Liberate Yourself at Liberia

Liberia serves as the capital for the Guanacaste province. It is the gateway to the beautiful beaches of Guanacaste. Recent years have seen a surge in the number of tourists. The new international airport in Liberia has opened a vista for American airlines. Although not a metropolitan city like San José, Liberia is small and quiet with a rich colonial history. The popularity of the city has led to the renovation of the downtown area. A mall, too, is under construction.

LiberiaThe city lies in close proximity to Tamarindo. The resorts in the nearby Papagayo Gulf have made Liberia a popular destination. The city is home to several national parks. The most popular parks include Parque Nacional Santa Rosa, Parque Nacional de la Vieja, and Parque Nacional Guanasate.

Santa Rosa National Park is the oldest park in the country. The ticos and tourists regard it in high esteem. The park leads to Witches Rock, which offers the best waves to surf on. The history of the park draws a number of local inhabitants.

The gang, led by William Walker, invaded the country in 1856. The lack of an organized army forced the locals to pool together and to fight the gang. The gang retreated to Nicaguara, where their leader was captured and killed. The battle led to the creation of several landmarks such as Hacienda Santa Rosa.

Rincon de la Vieja National ParkAnother famous national park is Rincon de la Vieja National Park. The Rincon Volcano is an active one. Watch the volcano steam. There are also several hot springs and mudpots. A number of lodges provide reasonable accommodation. The crowds at the beaches can be a deterrent to relaxation.

Liberia is also known as ‘the white city’ because of the presence of white adobe houses. It is also becoming a hub for business due to increase in tourism and modern developments along the coast. The flights landing at the Liberia International Airport has seen a surge in recent times.

A new geothermal electric power plant has been constructed to meet the increasing power needs. Also famous are the haciendas that go back to the 1800s.

Guanacaste has some of the largest cattle farms of the country. Liberia has served as the cultural capital of Costa Rica for many years. Every 25th of July sees the celebration of the Guanacaste Day festival. You shouldn’t miss this event if you want to soak in the culture of the country.

Liberia has earned reputation for its sugarcane juice called by the locals as Juego de Cana. Copez Ricos, which are Sno Cones in local style, ice cream parlors, and fresh seafood are other reasons to visit.
