Carefree Cartago

Cartago is the former capital of Costa Rica. It has some interesting ruins that date back to the 16th century. The church was erected in honor of Our Lady of Angels. This church has a statue of the Patron Saint of the country, Saint La Negrita also known as the Black Virgin.

CartagoThe history and culture of the city is unique. This made it the first capital of the country. The city was founded by Juan Vasquez de Coronado. It also is the first Spanish settlement of the country. The city served as the capital till 1823. Cartago lost to San José because of its location at the foot of Volcan Irazu. Cartago was almost destroyed due to this in 1723.

Visiting the city takes you back in time as there are many ruins of the 16th century. These were the pre-Columbian inhabitants who sustained primarily on agriculture. The Monumento Nacional Guayabo gives you a glimpse into the city’s past.

The city is well covered by forests. Some of them have been destroyed during the colonial rule. The villages of the city have a charm of their own. The old, adobe houses and buildings adorned with colorful wood are the hallmark of the city. The climate, too, is pleasant.

Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Los angelesThe largest church in the city is Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles. The church is home to La Negrita or Black Madonna. The statue is said to have healing powers, and draws large crowds. The feast day falls on August 2.

The Irazu Volcano lies to the north of the city, while the Parque Nacional Chirripó is to the south. Central America’s highest peak, Cerro Chirripó, can be accessed by visiting the park. The peak stands at an impressive 12,529 feet. It is a huge challenge to scale this peak. You need the best equipment and training if you want to taste success.

Spanish governor, Juan Vasquez de Coronado, has claimed that the valley of Cartago is the most beautiful that he has seen. The Spaniards constructed some of the most magnificent structures of the city.

Legend has it that in the year 1635 the Virgin Mary appeared as a small, black doll, which was seen by a girl named Juana Pereira. This happened for several times after which the Catholic authorities agreed to build a cathedral at the spot.

Orosi ValleyCartago is also famous for its coffee plantations. Other famous destinations within the city include Lankester Botanical Gardens, Irazu Volcano, the Orosi Valley, and the Guayabo National Park.

Its close proximity to San José makes day trips popular. The hotels are small and affordable. Some of them have a fireplace.

Buses leave from San José leave every 10 minutes. One-way tickets are also available.
