Cahuita is located along the Caribbean Coast of the country. It lies nearly 43 km south of Puerto Limon. The beaches consist of black sand. The waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The town of Cahuita lies to the south of Cahuita National Park. This national park is one of the most visited parks of the country. Besides the beaches, it offers rainforests and coral reefs to explore.

The neighboring town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca has become a hub for parties. This has made Cahuita popular as well. There are plenty of restaurants and local sodas in Cahuita. It is ideal for relaxation with a loved one.

The trails extend from the beaches to the coastal forest. The beaches lie in close proximity to one another, and serve as the perfect getaway for tourists. The butterfly garden offers other opportunities for touring and exploring. It is known locally as the Mariposario de Cahuites.

There are plenty of activities to choose from while at the beach. The months from March to May are best for snorkeling. The coral reefs can be explored through diving. Playa Negra is great for swimming. It is situated at the northwest end of Cahuita. Sportfishing off the coast is also common.

The town comprises close to 4000 residents. Most of the inhabitants are of Jamaican descent. Cheap labor was imported for work at the many banana plantations of the region. The inhabitants speak Africanized-Creole English. The culture and tradition of the region is well preserved.

Cahuita Beach

During the last 30 years, the town of Cahuita has gained in popularity. The construction of highways has made the area more accessible.

The local food is regarded as the best in Costa Rica. The cuisine varies from the traditional gallo pinto of the mestizo culture. Seasoned meats and curried goat or chicken are popular dishes of the town.

Guided tours are available to the Cahuita National Park. Equipments and boats can be rented. The accommodations of the area are designed to suit every budget.

Cahuita often makes news for the wrong reasons. For instance two such activities include drug trafficking and thefts. The town of Puerto Viejo has recently given Cahuita a run for its money.
